Walking, the Perfect Way to Mix Exercise and Recreational Pleasure
One of the sad things about the health of Americans and Britons in particular is that most do no get enough exercise, despite the modest recommendation of many doctors that even a half an hour a day is enough, and that the half an hour can take the form of a brisk walk.
Of course, a variety of exercise is best, but nonetheless anybody who can walk can surely fit in 30 minutes a day of walking, even as part of their daily work routine? Walking to the local store instead of hopping into the car for a 2 minute journey, taking a brisk walk around the park, or even just the streets at lunch time, can give some people all the exercise they need.
All depends, though, on your work routine, but if you care for yourself, and therefore care for your health, you can fit in a half hour walk on an average day.
I have always loved walking because, like cycling, it is so easy to combine with other interests, like a love of nature, bird watching, historical sites and many other things. Perhaps I have appreciated it more than most because by the time I was 27, I could scarcely walk with two walking sticks due to ankylosing spondylitis. Once I had dual hip replacements, I was immediately back to walking across the English countryside on a regular basis, and fitting in local walking as a part of my daily routine.
If you really do find it difficult to do that much walking in a normal day, then an exercise machine of some sort at home can help to make up the difference. I have had a stepper for that purpose for much of the last 20 years; or a treadmill or exercise bike both provide good exercise. Best of all, though, is that brisk walk wherever you enjoy and appreciate the most.
